Course Description: This course is intended to provide the student with an introduction to an overview of the visual arts from the Prehistoric era up to the Early Christian period in the West. It will include the study of Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations and their material culture, such as painting, architecture and sculpture.
Objectives: Students in this course will be expected to demonstrate 1) a cognizance of the major artistic monuments of each culture studied; 2) an understanding of the relationship of the monuments to their cultural and historical context; and 3) an awareness of the artistic styles associated with the cultures and the historical periods within these cultures.
Texts: Required: Janson’s History of Art (Seventh Edition)
Recommended: From Abacus to Zeus (or any typical Art History Handbook such as the Penguin Dictionary of Art and Artists)
Grading
500-445 = A
444-390 = B
389-335 = C
334-275 = D
274- below = F
Instructional Methods: This class is taught in a slide lecture format. There is no structured discussion (as in discussion groups), although there is always time for student initiated conversation about the matters at hand.
Exams: Two essay exams will be given over the term; they cover both materials in the text and that given in lecture. I provide material not in the book, and I will not cover everything in the text, so you must do both the reading and come to class to get the information you need to pass the exams. The exams are open note.
Quizzes: There are four reading/lecture and slide identification quizzes given throughout the semester. No late quizzes are given for any reason. They cover the material from lecture and anything you have been asked to read in the text book. The lowest quiz will be dropped automatically. The quizzes ARE NOT open note.
Writing Assignments: There will be four very short writing assignments given through the semester (TWO TYPED PAGES). Topics, and more information about the assignments will be given during the semester.
Extra Credit: I do not give “extra credit” assignments, so there is no point in asking me. The only extra credit available to you comes in the form of slide identification in the exams. The extra credit allows me to gauge how well you have internalized the lectures and the reading.
Professionalism in the Classroom: I expect everyone to behave in a manner that encourages education. This includes:
ATTENDENCE: This class is about visual culture. Therefore, if you aren’t here
to see the slides, or get the lectures, you cannot pass. ATTENDENCE IS
REQUIRED. If you accumulate more than three absences, you may find your grade adversely affected
PUNCTUALITY: If you are unavoidably late, do not enter through the front door, as you will be walking behind me in the middle of my lecture. I do not give late exams, so if you miss any part of the exam, you will have to pick up where you come in. If you will not be in class on the day of an exam, you must take it early if you are going to take it at all, since I will not give any make up exams for those you have missed, for any reason .
TAKE NOTES IN CLASS. If you have a question, or need clarification in the lecture, just shout out. Do not raise your hand, as I’m usually not looking at you; you’ll sit there until all the blood runs out of your arm and you pass out.
THINK: This class is about art, and art is a subjective thing. There are times in this semester that I will be saying “I don’t know”—not because I haven’t done the research, but because there is simply no agreed upon answer. In some instances this semester, there will be as many “answers” as there are people in the classroom. Therefore, I will expect that not everyone will agree with me all of the time, IN fact, I’d prefer it. This lets me know that you are thinking about what I am saying, and not just sitting there like plant life—organic, but non-responsive.
OPTIMIZE YOUR EDUCATION: I will help you as much as I possibly can, either in class or out of it. I will not give you the answers to the exam, I will not tell you what is going to be on the exam, except in the most general of terms, and I will not tolerate cheating of any sort. However, if you have problems, concerns, issues, etc., that I can possibly help with, I’ll be more than happy to talk to you. Additionally, if you have a documented disability, please let me know as soon as possible so that alternative arrangements can be made for you to succeed in this class.
