FCS 340/NUTRI 300 Students and those hoping to add (skip this if you are already enrolled):

If you tried adding my classes and they are all full, please continue to try. As students drop, spots open up on the waiting list. If you are not on my waiting list you will not be added. If you get a message saying "you need instructor permission to add" that means the waiting list is full. Please do not email me for permission. I do not add people who are not on my waiting list for any reason. I am sorry. Next time please try to register early and pay your fees promptly so you don't get dropped.
You may consider adding an FCS 340/NUTRI 300 class at the Sacramento City College Davis Center or West Sacramento Center. The SCC Davis & West Sac campuses are only about 15 minutes from the main campus and have free parking! Normally those classes do not fill to maximum capacity. (-:

FCS 340/NUTRI 300 Students who are already enrolled:
Welcome!!! I'm so glad you got in to this class! The FCS 340/NUTRI 300 classes fill very quickly so you should feel very happy to have gotten a spot! I'm also happy that you followed the directions in the schedule of classes which told you to check out my website! Here is what you need to know to get started on the road to success in my class:

1) For the Online class: I will have a mandatory, one-hour, orientation session that must be completed during the first week of classes, even if you have had an online class before. This semester, if you are enrolled in my class, I will give you two options

You may attend the In-Person Orientation (highly recommended). The Date for the In-Person Orientation date for Spring 2009 will be Thursday 1/22 at 6:00 pm in LR 141 (the Learning Resource Center) on the SCC Main Campus (first floor on your right side).

OR....

You may view the Orientation Video File on the left pane of this screen called, "Orientation Video for FCS 340 online/itv". If you choose this option be sure to do the items I tell you to do in the video by Monday 1/26/2009 at 6:30pm or you may be dropped for missing the mandatory orientation! This video was created for both my online and ITV courses. Note: You will need Windows Media Player to play this video. Also note that this video file was updated on January the 6th 2009 to reflect our change to D2L (rather than blackboard). If you viewed the file prior to Jan 6th 2009, please watch it again to see the changes.

Many students want to know, is an online class right for me? In my opinion Nutrition works well in the online environment as long as the online student is willing to be very self-motivated! You don't need to have a lot of computer skills. You will need to follow my course calendar very closely, you will have to check the "announcements board" at least twice a week and you will have to be sure to keep up with all of the material that is required of you. If you need someone to tell you what to do each day, an online class probably isn't for you. I do post your goals for the week on our announcement board each week to remind you of what you should be working on. 2) For the ITV (interactive television) class I will have a mandatory, orientation session the first day of class (Tuesday 1/20/2009). I would prefer that you attend the first day in-person (Learning Resource Center Rm 119) so I can meet you and we can clear up any questions you might have in a face-to-face format! If for some reason you absolutely can not attend one in-person orientation session please view the video file posted on the left called, "Orientation Video for FCS 340 online/ITV". If you would like to know what an ITV class is like or if it is right for you, please go to our distance education page for Sac City. Many students want to know, is an ITV course right for me? An ITV course is NOT the same as a telecourse! It is not simply re-played over and over it is a live teacher who is able to answer your questions if you wish to call in or attend in-person. It is just being broadcast (live) on TV and on the internet. It is called "ITV" which stands for interactive TV because you can interact as much as you wish. For some people, seeing a real live person and being able to ask questions during lecture makes a big difference. This is different from an online class because it is like watching a movie that you can interact with. You can also choose to come in person (we have a studio-classroom in LR 119) or watch from home or even work (if you can get away with it)!!! 3) All of my FCS 340/NUTRI 300 classes: the ITV class, online classes and my face to face classes will follow the same calendar. Take a look at the calendar and syllabus on the left of this screen. If the syllabus/calendar for your semester isn't posted yet, it will be soon.

Here is an example of my orientation for my online class from last semester. Your class will be run in a very similar manner so if you truly can not attend the orientation I will have you watch this video.
