Does your computer system support these file types?

Sample files that you might need for distance ed courses. Not all file types will be used in all courses – check with your instructor for the ones you need.

To test whether or not your computer system will correctly play the file, double click on the link. If it opens properly, you have the application you need. Note that some applications can be downloaded for free (particularly media players) and some might need to be purchased.

If you are a student or instructor, you can often find discounted prices on applications. Microsoft offers many applications at a discounted price through office and computer stores. You can also check at:

File typeExt Information
Text Files .txt Text File Generic text files using basic word processing software (Notepad). Can be viewed in most word processing (and some other) programs.
Rich Text Files .rtf Rich Text File Generic text files using basic word processing software (WordPad/Works). Can be viewed in most word processing programs
Word Files .doc Word File MicroSoft Word files – can usually be successfully viewed in either Windows or Mac word processing software – and usually in newer WordPerfect applications
Powerpoint Presentations .ppt PowerPoint File Presentation file can sometimes be viewed in presentation software different from Microsoft.
Excel Spreadsheets .xls Excel File Spreadsheet file can be used in most updated spreadsheet programs and some other applications when imported
Acrobat Files .pdf Adobe Acrobat PDF file Can be viewed on most computers if an Acrobat Reader (free) program has been downloaded Adobe Reader
Flash Files .swf Shockwave File MacroMedia Flash File Format to be used with MacroMedia Flash player (free download: Flash Player Download (This is a fun one, the rabbit thinks the mouse pointer is a carrot - once he gets it, you'll have trouble shaking him loose.
Audio .mp3 MP3 File A music file created with an audio compression technology that compresses CD-quality sound by a factor of roughly 10, while retaining most of the original fidelity. MP3 files are played via media player software in the computer or in countless handheld players that use flash memory or hard disks for storage. Free downloads for playing MP3s at: MP3 Player
Quicktime Audio & Movies .mov Quicktime Movie files for digital video files in the QuickTime format. QuickTime
Windows Media Files .wmf Windows Metafile File Graphics file format used to exchange graphics information between Microsoft Windows applications. WMF files can hold both vector and bit-mapped images.
Windows Audio Files .wav WAV file The format for storing sound in files developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM. Support for WAV files was built into Windows 95 making it the de facto standard for sound on PCs. WAV sound files end with a .wav extension and can be played by nearly all Windows applications that support sound.
