1. Eligibility for this service is determined by the Disability Resource Center (DRC) Coordinator or Counselor and is based in part on the professional documentation provided by the student.
2. Alternate media must be requested each semester it is needed.
3. For each semester that alternate media is requested:
a. An Alternate Media Request form must be filled out with the DRC Coordinator or a DRC Counselor.
b. The student must meet with the Alternate Media Specialist to finalize the alternate media request. The production of alternate media will NOT begin until the student has met with the Alternate Media Specialist.
4. Students requesting materials in alternate formats must own a physical copy of the textbooks or other course material, or obtain said materials before the alternate media will be distributed.
5. Requests for materials in alternate format will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Once a request is made, preference will be given to the format specified by the student. However, the recommendation of the DRC professionals will be used in determining the specific media format for each academic course.
6. Alternate media requests must be submitted as soon as the student learns of their need; late requests will be honored provided that the student making the request understands that the DRC Coordinator will set the timeline for completion of the work accordingly.
7. Blind and visually impaired students will be given first priority when submitting alternate media requests. All other requests will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
8. Turn-around times for alternate media requests are determined on a case-by-case basis. Upon review of material to be formatted and converted, the Alternate Media Specialist will notify the student of the projected completion date. The DRC will make every effort to complete the request in a timely manner. Some types of alternate media, such as braille or audio MP3s, are timely to produce.
9. When creating alternate media from textbooks, the book bindings may be cut off. A spiral binding will replace the original binding before the book is returned to the student. If the student is unwilling to have the binding cut off a textbook, Sacramento City College may not be able to provide alternate media accommodations.
10. The student will not copy or reproduce any alternate media provided by the DRC, nor allow anyone else to do so. Misuse of this material may result in disciplinary action by Sacramento City College.
11. Students will be provided with one alternate format copy for each material required for academic use. This electronic file is copyrighted and may not be reproduced or distributed in a format other than a specialized format exclusively for use by blind or other persons with disabilities. Any further reproduction or distribution in a format other than a specialized format is an infringement.
12. If a student repeatedly abuses SCC alternate media services by not picking up requested alternate media or repeatedly dropping classes after alternate media has been produced, alternate media services may be revoked by the DRC.
13. Student questions regarding alternate media should be addressed directly to the Disability Resource Center or Alternate Media Specialist.
14. The DRC may not begin production of alternate media unless the textbook AND syllabus for the course has been submitted by the student.
15. We require a TWO MONTH (preferably three month) notice for any math, science, or foreign language textbook that a student would like to be Brailled. If a alternate media form had not been submitted WITH a textbook at least two months before the beginning of the semester, we cannot guarantee the timely delivery of Braille materials.
