Ethnic Studies Behavioral and Social Sciences Division Hello and Welcome! The need for a more extensive inclusion of minority groups in the American educational system is widely recognized. Open to all Sacramento City College students, the Ethnic Studies program serves as a response to the needs, demands, and experiences of Sacramento’s minority communities. It can be of vital importance to the student because the program makes available a perspective on ethnic groups not ordinarily fully provided in educational institutions. Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary study of cultures.  Linguistic, historical and contemporary issues relating to African Americans, Asian Americans, Chicanos/as-Latinos/as and Native Americans. The program directs students to critically examine the cultural contributions made by these groups to world civilization and American society. Ethnic Studies challenges all students to analyze existing generalizations, theories and concepts about racial and ethnic groups in order to develop valid generalizations, concepts and theories. (taken from the CSUS Ethnic Studies website)  Program Information At Sacramento City College, the Ethnic Studies Program is comprised of four areas: African American studies, Asian American Studies, Mexican American Studies and Native American Studies. Ethnic Studies is a degree-granting interdisciplinary program offering course work in the study of the histories, cultures, languages and issues--past and present--which define and shape the ethnic group experience in the United States. In addition to an introductory course in Ethnic Studies, general courses on American ethnic groups are also offered in Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, and History. Students are encouraged to become intellectually and programmatically involved in eliminating racial, ethnic and gender-based problems. Students are also encouraged to blend professional area studies with Ethnic Studies. Career Opportunities The Ethnic Studies program can fulfill a liberal arts major for the transfer or non-transfer student who wishes to be informed in the field. The program will also give a background to students hoping to teach. Ethnic Studies majors and minors enter careers and professions in both the public and private sectors. Majors and minors are employed in such occupations as urban specialists, labor relations specialists, teachers, counselors, criminal justice officers, community center directors, and family service agents.
