Welcome! This semester, there are a number of volunteer and a few paid internship positions throughout nonprofit organizations in the Sacramento area. Students interested in exploring work in human services are encouraged to sign up for Sociology 385, the sociology internship practicum. I also coordinate the Service-Learning program, an opportunity for students to connect specific course concepts to community service. There are new courses in Mathematics and multiple sections of courses in sociology and Psychology. Check out Service-Learnng opportunities on the quick link menu off the SCC Homepage under "Service-Learning." Contact me at my email address flaherp@scc.losrios.edu or by phone 650-2940 or drop by my office in RS 282, if you have any questions about these courses. I also have resources for students that are interested in exploring careers in sociology and/or human services and would be delighted to visit with you.

I am most interested in developing the sociological perspective, because I believe that with the tools of sociology students will be more informed, happier, and help to create a better world for all people. My work in community studies involves establishing internships for students who are exploring working with people in a helping capacity. I have been teaching sociology for over thirty years in various institutions and have also had a career in human services. I try to bring my lifelong community experience into the classroom by providing an applied, hands-on approach to traditional sociology classes. Students engage in group work, simulations and lots of experiential activities in which I attempt to breathe life into abstract concepts. Most importantly I love teaching sociology and find that I am constantly inspired and motivated by the students at Sacramento City College!

By clicking on Classes on the navigational bar to the left of this page you should be able to access syllabi for each class that I am teaching this semester. contact me at 650-2940 or flaherp@scc.losrios.edu if you have any problems. I will also try to post handouts when they are in electronic form.
