If so, this course may be "JUST 4 YOU"

But DON'T DELAY! availability is limited and spots go quickly!!!

Below are some frequently asked questions about this course.  Take the time to read through them and then SIGN UP!

Q: Do I need a job to take this course?

yes, this course is designed for students who currently have assignments within the field of Administration of Justice.

Q:  Will the instructor help me find an internship?

No, if you would like to find an internship you need to take the AJ498: Work Experience course with instructors McKee or Thorpe

Q:  How do I know if I am eligible to take this course?

There are many types of jobs that relate to the system of criminal justice - including positions that deal specifically with law enforcement (both public and private enforcement), courts, corrections (including institutional and community corrections) and many others.

If you have a job or internship in one of these areas - you are eligible to take this online course

If you have questions about your specific assignment contact me:   gouldk@scc.losrios.edu

Q:  How Difficult it this course?

Students who have taken this course in the past report that assignments require less than one hour a week to complete.

Common sense and the ability to genuinely reflect on your own work experience will help you greatly.  Some of topics that AJ498 online courses will explore are:  racism, cultural diveristy, personality conflicts in the work place, conflicts of interest, challenges in the work place, scenarios, etc.

Q:  I have never taken an online class before - what should I expect?

First, unlike the other AJ498 courses, this online course does not meet.  There are absolutely no classes to attend.

Next, the SCC Blackboard e-learning site is super easy.  You just need a computer and an email address to get started.

On the first day of the course, I will be sending you an email with easy step-by-step instructions on how to access Blackboard e-learning site.

MAKE SURE TO REGISTER FOR THE CLASS WITH THE EMAIL ADDRESS WHERE YOU CAN RECEIVE MESSAGES.  Remember, you can receive an email address through Sac. City College if you do not have one.

Q:  What types of assignments and responsibilities should I expect?

1. Student Information Form:

2. Learning Objectives Form:

You will need one learning objective for every unit you are taking the course for.  So, if you are signing up for 2 units you will need 2 "Learning Objectives"

One of the first things you will do is figure out what YOU want to improve about your approach to work.

(example:  if you deal with the public you would like to improve your communication skills in order to be more effective) this is an example of one of your "Learning Objectives"

3.  Employer Authorization form:

to be singed by your supervisor stating that they understand that you are earning college units for 'working' your regualr

Supervisor should provide phone number in case I should need to contact them.

4. Learning Objectives Evaluation form

where you/your supervisor grade yourself on meeting your learning objectives

5.  Job Journals (weekly)

Private emails sent directly to me

6.  Discussion Boards

One original entry and 2 responses to classmates entries.

Further description of discussion boards are given once you are inside the Blackboard e-learning site.

7.  Timesheet Form

Q: Grading?

Students who meet the weekly time deadlines for assignments (Sunday night - midnight) will receive an "A" for the course.

Q:  Are there tests or textbook readings?

There are NO TESTS and there is NO TEXTBOOK to buy.  the assignments are inside of the SCC Blackboard e-learning site.

Q:  What is the purpose of this course?

In the end, the assignments are designed to help you evaluate your approach to working in this dynamic and sometimes difficult line of work.  The weekly job journals, for example, will help you to outline and measure your own workload and give feedback about work-related issues.

Students report two of the biggest benefits of taking this course is how quickly they were able to earn undergraduate elective college credit, and also, how they had the opportunity to network with other criminal justice professionals and get the 'inside secrets' of what different jobs are like and how to interview and test for those assignments.

Q:  Can I take this course more than once?

yes, you can take this course a total of 4 times.

Note:  I offer this course 6 times a year - each of the courses is different from the others - so keep this in mind if you choose to take the course multiple times.

Q:  How many units can I earn?

you can earn 4 units PER SEMESTER

Q:  When are the classes offered?

During the fall and spring semesters this course is offered as two 9-week courses running back-to-back.

In the summer, this course if offered as two 4-week long classes running back-to-back.

and yes, you can take this course twice each semester if you like...you can also take both summer courses (but remember, you can only earn 4 units per semester)

if you choose to enroll in both 9-week classes running back-to-back during the same semester please note that the admissions computer will allow you to enroll in the second course on MONDAY (the first day of the second class)

Q:  HOW do I earn units?

The number of elective units you can earn depends on the number of hours you will be work ing during the 9-week or 4-week period.

For example, if you will be working 300 hours or more during the 9-week course you can earn 4-Units

225 hours=3 units

150 hours=2 units

75   hours=1 unit

Typically, the 4 week summer course only allows for 2 units.

When you register and enroll in the course, admissions will want to know how many units you want to take the class for.

Remember, you must calculate the number of hours you will be working in advance and then sign up for the course and list the number of units you expect to earn by the completion of the class.

You will then pay for that number of units.

You will not be able this number so make sure you calculate and forecast your hours properly

Q:  How do I keep track of my hours?

I will give you a timesheet and you will log your hours through out the course.  At the end of the course you will turn in the timesheet (your supervisor will need to sign this form).

Q:  Is there an orientation for this course?

Not necessarily.  If you follow the step-by-step instructions I send you on the first day of class you should be just fine.

If you need to get a hands-on orientation contact me.

Q:  Are there special forms and permission I need to get from my employer?

yes,  I will give you forms to fill out (some of them need a supervisor or senior staff signature on them).  There are 5 forms in all.  There are deadlines for when the forms need to be turned in so take notice.
