COURSE OBJECTIVES:        To inform students of the development and growth of law enforcement agencies in the including their purpose, function, responsibilities, and challenges.  To acquaint students with the law enforcement career and the requirements for entrance into police work.  To analyze the methods employed to enforce the law in a democratic society.  To compare and contrast the roles of Police, Prosecutor, Defense Attorney, Judge, Courts and Corrections.  To thoroughly explain the role of all participants in our Administration of Justice System.

 

REQUIRED TEXT:                  “Criminal Justice …a brief introduction” 7th Ed. by Frank Schmalleger (Blue Book)

 

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

Lecture, required reading, visual aids and group exercises.

II.         Grading

 

A.        Midterm Exams will be completed in essay form, Final Exams will be completed in multiple choice and True/False test form.  Quizzes will require multiple-choice and True/False responses.  The essay exams shall be written responses to course topics.  Students will adequately develop and support their written responses in a well-organized and thoughtful (intelligent) manner.

Three Quizzes (65 pts each):                                            195 Points

Attendance                                                                      100 Points

Assignment(s)                                                                     5 Points each

Total:                                                                               500 + Points

III.       Attendance:

 

Students will be awarded 100 points for perfect attendance.   You will be given a midterm attendance score and a final attendance score- each worth 50 points.

 

Students will lose 3 points for each hour they miss up to 9 points. He/She will lose 25 points for the 4th absence and beyond. 

 

 

An academic hour is 50 minutes.

 

Students arriving late to class are asked to avoid disruption by sitting near the       entrance.

 

*Due to the disruption, students are reminded NOT to attend class if they are more than 15 minutes late to class

 

*On testing dates, students arriving more than 10 minutes beyond the start of the test will be required to make-up the test

 

Students will lose attendance points for any absence (excused or unexcused)

 

Students turning in late assignments will have scores docked 10 points for every day of               late status.  I do not accept assignments as email attachments.

 

The Instructor will drop a student who has more than 6 absences.

 

 

After the 2nd week of classes, students arriving late to class (after the role sheet has been passed around), will lose attendance points for that day - (even though they may attend a large portion of the class). 

 

IV.       Make-up Exams/Extra Credit

 

Make-up exams and quizzes will be given only at the discretion of the Instructor and then only on the last day of the semester or at the time of the Final Exam.  Students are allowed ONE make-up quiz.  There is no make-up for midterms or final exams. All make-up quizzes will require multiple-choice and true/false responses.  Extra credit work is only at the discretion of the Instructor or only for those students who are failing the class even though they are making a sincere effort and have no attendance problems.

I.          This Course syllabus is to be considered a tentative outline of course progression.  The study plan is at the discretion of the Instructor and is subject to change.
