COURSE OBJECTIVES:    This course will compare and contrast probation and parole.  Topics will include organization, function, goals, historical development and treatment theory and practice and how these concepts are utilized in California

 

REQUIRED TEXT:              Probation, Parole and Community Corrections, Fifth Ed., Dean John Champion

 

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

                                     Lecture, required reading, visual aids and group exercises.

 

I.          Course Responsibilities:

A.        Completion of Reading Assignments

B.        Class Participation

C.        Class Attendance

D.        Completion of all quizzes, examinations, and projects

            E.        PUNCTUALITY!!!

 

II.          Grading:

A.        Midterm Exams will be completed in essay form, Final Exams will be completed in multiple choice and True/False test form.  Quizzes will require multiple-choice and True/False responses.  The essay exams shall be written responses to course topics.  Students will adequately develop and support their written responses in a well-organized and thoughtful (intelligent) manner.

 

Midterm:                                                        100 Points

Final:                                                              100 Points

Three Quizzes (50 pts each):                      150 Points

10 Assignment(s):                                          50 Points

 Attendance:                                                  100 Points semester

Total:                                                             500 + Points 

 

Grade Points:
 

A=                                           450-500 Points         90%

B=                                           359-449 Points         80%

C=                                           251-358 Points         70%

D=                                           150-250 Points         60%

F=                                            0-149     Points

 

III.         Attendance:

 

Students will be awarded 100 points for perfect attendance. Students will              lose 3 points for each hour they miss up to 9 points. He/She will lose 25

 points for the 4th hour and beyond.   

 

Students who submit assignments late will have scores docked 10-points for every week day of late status.  I do not accept assignments as email attachments.

 

Students arriving late to class are asked to avoid disruption by sitting near the entrance

 

*Due to the disruption, students are reminded NOT to attend class if they are more than 15 minutes late to class.

 

*On testing dates, students arriving more that 10 minutes beyond the start of the test will be required to make-up the test.

 

An academic hour is 50 minutes.

 

Students will lose attendance points for any absence (excused or unexcused)

 

The Instructor will drop a student who has more than 6 absences.

After the 2nd week of classes, students arriving late to class (after the role sheet has been passed around), they will lose attendance points for that day - (even though they may attend a large portion of the class). 

 

IV.        Make-up Exams/Extra Credit:

Make-up exams and quizzes will be given only at the discretion of the Instructor and then only on the last day of the semester or at the time of the Final Exam.  Students will be allowed to take ONE make-up quiz only.  There is no make-up for midterms or final exams.  All make-up quizzes will require multiple-choice and True/False responses. Extra credit work is only at the discretion of the Instructor and only for those students who are failing the class even though they are making a sincere effort and have no attendance problems.

I.          This Course syllabus is to be considered a tentative outline of course progression.  The study plan is at the discretion of the Instructor and is subject to change.

Quiz #1 (on chapters 1,2 & 3 only - week 4)

 

SECTION TWO:

 

Weeks 5-8:

Chapters 5, 6 & 7

Quiz #2 (week 8 - chapters 5, 6, 7)

      

           MIDTERM PROJECT- Week 11

 

SECTION THREE:

 

Week 9-13:

                        Chapters 8-11 

                        Quiz #3 (week 13 - chapters 8, 9, 10 only)

 

 

SECTION FOUR:

 

Week 14-17:

Chapters 12, 13, 14

Prepare for Final (Chapters 12 & 13 only)

 

                              FINAL EXAM WEEK 18
