Jazz Improv Spring 2008

It is very important that jazz musicians have a complete knowledge of scales and chords. The first scale to learn is the major scale. If you don't know your scales Major Scales Exercise I is something you must complete. This will also help you understand key signatures and tonal centers.

The next step after learning scales is to learn and memorize the names of all triads. Triads on each Degree of the Scale is written on the piano staff and is easy to read.

The Triad_Exercise is an exercise in learning and building triads on each scale degree in all 12 keys.

The Seventh_Chord_Exercise is an exercise in learning and building Cmaj7, C7 and Cm7 chords in all 12 keys.

Almost all of the top contemporary musicians of today can read chord symbols very well, expecially jazz musicians. The II V I Beg is a beginning voicing exercise that will help learn to read chord symbols and play them with good 'voicings'.

Utilizing good 'voicing' techniques will make your comping sound smooth. II V I Adv is a four is an advanced voicing excercise in A position.

Once you have memorized the exercise you can begin to practice using the chords. Let's try them on Autumn Leaves This song makes excellent use of the ii V I progression and has an easy melody.

Autumn Leaves_Voicing Exercise will show you how to get started, once have completed this exercise try it on the other tunes listed above.
