Web Accessibility

Universal Web Accessibility: "The power of the Web is in its universality.
Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."
- Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web -

What is Web Accessibility?

Making a Web page "accessible" means that steps have been taken to ensure that it is usable by people with disabilities.  Many people with disabilities use assistive technology to access the web. When your Web pages are accessible, it helps to make assistive technologies work more effectively.

Why Must We Make Our Web Pages Accessible?

First of all, it's just the right thing to do!  Also, as a publicly funded educational institution, we are required by Federal (Section 508) and State (SB 105) laws to ensure that our Web pages are universally accessible.

How Do I Make My Web Pages Accessible?

The process of making a Web site accessible can range in difficulty.  Some are easy, some are a bit more difficult.  Assistance in this process is available here at SCC! Janelle Pettler, Alternate Media Specialist, can help identify "problem areas" on your Web site, as well as solutions.

Areas that need to be accessibility include:

  • Distance Education / Blackboard
  • Manila Web sites
  • WServer Web sites created with FrontPage, Dreamweaver, HTML, etc.
