October 2005 - Please read the new instructions on quizzes. Point your students to this information found under the HELP tab at the top of any Bb window. http://ic.arc.losrios.edu/~itc/Blackboard/pages/quizproblems.htm
Here are current tips for Assessments in Blackboard.
- Stop students from printing your test. Add this text to the FIRST question in your assessment:
<style type="text/css">@media print {BODY {display:none}} </style>
- Modify an Assessment to b/e visible or invisible to students. You can do this manually or by setting the calendar options for the quiz item.
- We recommend NOT to make the quiz open in a new window (otherwise a student's pop-up blocker will keep them getting to the quiz).
- We recommend using the one-question at a time option to avoid Internet Service Provider time-out issues which sometimes keep students from being able to submit at the end of a long quiz.
- The quiz timer appears in the Status Bar of the Browser window. Remember that the Status Bar's visibility is controlled by the user, from the View menu (IE for Windows and Mac).
Here is a tip from Masha Conley at ARC:
Are students having trouble taking tests. It might be due to using a Pop-Up Blocker. Tell instructors NOT to have quizzes launch in a new window! I've been recommending this for a long time and combined with making sure they have the questions appear one question at at time is important. We have had a lot less problems with quizzes since instructors started using both of these settings.
Here is what Derrill Bodly told his students:
NEVER LEAVE A QUIZ PAGE UNATTENDED!
Avoid the dreaded "locks" which occur when one of the computer links involved in an online class (the Blackboard system and/or server, or your browser and/or computer) decides you aren't doing enough to maintain the link and breaks your connection to the quiz web page. This will "lock you out" of taking the quiz again. "Locks" require manual "unlocking" by the instructor, and "unlocking" cannot and does not occur as frequently or as quickly as "locks" do, so you may be "locked out" of a quiz and not be able to get a score for it (locks produce zero point scores). Generally, all existing locks are cleared periodically until 24 hours before the deadline for a quiz; DURING THE LAST 24 HOURS BEFORE A QUIZ DEADLINE, NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE. This means that if you take or retake a quiz during the last 24 hours before its deadline due date, you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK.
ALWAYS "SUBMIT" (I.E. COMPLETE) THE QUIZ!
Again, to avoid "locks", do not use your browser's "Back" button or other navigating controls except the "Submit" button at the bottom of the quiz web page, or the arrow navigation tools provided underneath individually-presented quiz questions. Using other controls (except as directed by the instructor) may break the connection you have with your quiz web page, and you may be locked out (see above). Unless otherwise specified, ALL quizzes can be taken more than once. So it doesn't matter what score you get the first time you take the quiz, because you can always take it again (and again, if necessary).
