Hybrid Classes

Smiley:                        FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT:

What is a "Hybrid Class"?   A hybrid class includes BOTH face to face (F2F) and online instruction.

What textbook(s) will I need for this course?  Use the Courses button to find your class.

What other supplies will I need?  You will need a binder in which to keep course information and essays/rhetoric you print out.  In other words, I expect you create your own class notebook of information, not just read the information online.  You will need to bring the binder to class.

Do I need to own a computer to take this class?  Although having a home computer will make it easier (more convenient), you may also use a computer in one of our campus computer labs.

What should my home computer be able to do?  You will need to have internet access--preferably high-speed access.  You should also have a printer and MS Word  or other word processing software.

Do I need an e-mail account:  Absolutely.  Most of the communication in this class will be via e-mail.  If you don't already have one, or if you want a special account just for this class, create a go mail account through SCC.

WHY

Students choose a hybrid class for various reasons.

  • Some like the flexibility of only coming to class on campus one day a week and doing the other day's lesson at a convenient time.
  • Some enjoy the whole "cyber scene," getting lessons online, submitting them electronically.
  • Some like the personal one-on-one help available via e-mail with the instructo

WHO?

Hybrid classes are not for everyone.  Sign up for a hybrid class if you

  • enjoy working with computers;
  • are not "afraid" to try new things and/or don't mind learning sometimes through trial and error;
  • have good reading skills;
  • are willing to work;
  • have outside commitments that interfere with your ability to attend class twice a week;
  • are self motivated and are able to complete assignments on time.

Don't sign up for a hybrid class if you

  • need to have someone constantly "nag" you to get work done;
  • are afraid of using computers;
  • don't have an e-mail address;
  • don't check your e-mail very often;
  • (in most cases) if you don't have a computer with internet access at home;
  • are considering taking the class just because you like the instructor;
  • are looking for an "easy A."

WHEN?

When does this class meet face to face?  For the first week, we will meet both Tuesday and Thursday in RS 311.  After the first week, we will meet F2F every Thursday.   Tuesday's lesson will be posted online and will be submitted electronically using the blackboard site.

Why is the first week different?  Meeting twice on the first week will enable me to explain how Blackboard works AND to make sure all students are comfortable using it.  At the second class meeting, you will actually submit and receive files through the blackboard site.

Do I have to attend the face to face sessions?  Yes.  This class has an attendance policy.  See the "Course Information Sheet"--available the first week of the semester.

Do I have to do the online lesson?  Yes.  This class has an attendance policy.  "Course Information Sheet".  If you do not submit the online lesson by the due date/time, you will be considered "absent."

HOW?

Do I have to "login" every week during the second class time?  Sometimes we will have synchronous ("live") sessions, but usually you will have an assignment to do at your own pace.  This allows students flexibility in their schedules.

How do I submit online lessons?  On the class website, there is a tool called Assignments where you can "submit" your work from your home computer.  More information will be given during the first week of class.

Do I have to know how to use blackboard before the first day of class.  No, not necessarily.  During the first week, I will be able to demonstrate how the blackboard tools work.  I have also devised some handouts  to help you.  What you WILL need is a desire to learn--sometimes through trial and error.

Please e-mail me:  lewisa@scc.losrios.edu

but please be specific and PLEASE don't e-mail me over the break (December 21st to January 20th).
