Extended Course Description:
- "California is Elusive," writes historian Kevin Starr.
- The Elusive Eden, reads the title of one California history book.
- Many Californias, reads the title of Gerald Haslam's anthology of California literature.
Through an in-depth study of the literature of our state, we will grapple with the question of defining a California "identity":
- Who are we?
- Where do we live?
- How does our geographical and historical location affect the literature that we produce?
- Is California as "elusive" as these writers claim?
- Are there trends/patterns to OUR literature?
All students taking this class are living in California - this is YOUR class, YOUR literature. Therefore, this will be a student-centered classroom where you will have ample opportunity to compare your own California experiences--dreams and realities--with those of the authors whose work we will be reading.
Because this class is online, I won't be able to have F2F guests as I did last time I taught the class - but contemporary California writers will be appearing via video - even some SCC faculty . . .
Requirements (tests, essays, etc.)--aka, how will your grade be determined:
I will be preparing the syllabus and course information sheet over the next few weeks, but I "anticipate" that the requirements will consist of the following -
- midterm
- final
- essay
- student participation
Because this is an online class, I wanted you to see what I'll look like both in the classroom and for the online portion.
