Grievances

If a student has a grievance, they are advised to use the following process:  First, they should talk to the instructor.  This should be done during office hours, not in the classroom.  If the student feels that the instructor is not handling the issue properly, they should next go to the Dean.  Most cases are settled at this point; if not, they should contact Julia Jolly who is the Grievance and Equity Officer.

Connecting with students and making sure that they feel comfortable communicating with you will go a long way toward avoiding a situation in which a student feels the need to file a grievance.  Also, classroom policies should be clearly stated on the syllabus, including a clear breakdown of the grading and attendance policies.  Grades are not grievable, but differential treatment is.  Therefore, make sure that your grading policy is clear and consistent.
