Preparing for the First Day of Class
There are a few things that you will need before arriving on campus for the first day of class.
Parking
A staff parking permit will enable you to park in Staff Parking on campus and at the other Los Rios District Colleges. Parking permits are free for all staff, and are available from the College Police, located on Sacramento City College Way at the base of the new parking structure. Their normal office hours are 8am to 5pm. Bring your driver's license and license plate number when you apply for a parking permit.
Keys
Also make sure that you have the keys to enter your classrooms. Key issue request forms are available in the Operations Folder under "SCC Workgroup" in Public Folders on Outlook. The form should be filled out, signed by the Division Dean, then taken or sent to Operations which is in South Gym 129. In some divisions the Secretary orders all new keys, so check with your division office for specific details. Please allow approximately one week for key requests to be filled.
Curriculum
Soon after you are hired, your Division Dean and Department Chair will inform you as to which classes you will be teaching. Look at the curriculum forms for your assigned classes in order to determine what course topics to include and what textbooks can be used. Curriculum for all classes can be viewed in SOCRATES, which is accessible via your intranet account. After logging in, select "SOCRATES Curriculum Services" which will allow you to view courses by discipline.
Duplicating
After you have designed your courses and created your syllabi, Duplicating Services can assist in creating copies of your syllabi. Duplicating request forms are available in Duplicating Services, in division offices, and online. These are filled out and submitted, along with the originals, to Duplicating Services. Please allow between three and ten days for this service to be completed, depending on the size of the job. Visit the Reprographics page for more information on all the facilities available and how to submit a duplicating request online.
Class Rosters
In addition to your syllabi, you will need copies of your class rosters. These are also available through your intranet account under "Online Grade Reporting and Class Rosters." Your class roster may show a "wait list" of students who want to enroll in your class, but the class is either full or the open enrollment deadline has passed. Whether or not you accept wait-listed students into a full class is a personal decision. An over-full class is acceptable as long as there are enough seats for everyone. If you do decide to accept more students, begin at the top of the wait list and provide each of these students with a permission number.
The "Online Grading and Class Rosters" site is also where you will post grades and can obtain contact information for your students.
Ordering Textbooks
When the time to order textbooks comes around, you will receive a notification from the Division Secretary. Check the curriculum forms for the course that you are teaching to see which textbooks have been approved for use with each course. If you would like to use a book that has not already been approved for use in the class, you must obtain a copy of it and submit it for review, along with a textbook adoption form available in the division office, to three full-time members of your department and the Division Dean.
Representatives from textbook publishing firms will visit the campus at least once per semester. If you are interested in reviewing a text for course use, you can request one from the representative, or write to the publisher to request a review copy. These are often provided free of charge, or at minimal cost. Once you adopt a text for classroom use, you can obtain a free desk copy and any ancillary materials that are provided by the publisher.
Disability Accommodation Forms
Students might present forms from the Disability Resource Center indicating special needs and accommodations. Please see the section on Student Services for more information on the Disability Resource Center.
Prerequisites
Instructors of courses with prerequisites are required to check these themselves. Please consult with your division dean for more information on any division policies regarding prerequisites.
