New Faculty Module

Pre-Semester Flex Days

The Thursday and Friday before the first week of classes are pre-semester "Flex" days.  "Flex" refers to "flexible learning."  Flex hours are a contractual obligation for all adjunct and full-time staff in order to fulfill their total hourly workload obligation.  The Staff Resource Center and Instructional Development plan workshops and distribute a catalog of Flex opportunities, which is also available on the Staff Resource Center website.  The Flex obligation for regular, full-time faculty who are not teaching overload is twelve hours per semester.  An extra hour is added for each hour of overload classes being taught on Thursdays and/or Fridays.  For example, if a faculty member is teaching one overload class, and it meets for one hour on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, then s/he is responsible for one extra hour of Flex.  The Flex obligation for adjunct faculty corresponds to the number of hours that they will teach on Thursdays and Fridays.  For example, an adjunct faculty member teaching 1.5 hours on Thursdays and one hour on Fridays will have a total Flex obligation of 2.5 hours.

The Friday of Pre-Semester Flex Days is required for all full-time faculty, as this is when convocation, division and department meetings occur.  Remaining Flex hours can be completed on Flex Thursday or throughout the semester.  Flex obligation forms, available from the Division Secretary and on the Staff Resource Center website, must be filled-out and submitted to the Division Dean.
