New Faculty Module

Ancillary Duties and Opportunities

Although teaching is the primary duty of most faculty at SCC, there are also other duties, including serving on committees, participating in the peer review process, and exploring professional development opportunities.

Campus Committes

Serving on campus committees is an excellent way to get to know your colleagues outside of your division and to become involved in the operation of the college.  SCC has twelve standing committees.  If you are interested in a committee, you can contact the chairperson in order to learn more about the committee.  Once you have decided that you want to join, you will contact the Academic Senate President in order to state your request.

All faculty are invited to attend the Academic Senate meetings that are held the first and third Thursdays of each month from 12-1 in Rodda North 258.  This is a great way to learn how the college operates.

Peer Review

Full-time faculty are eligible for tenure after completion of their fourth year of full-time employment at SCC.  The Peer Review Team, or Oversight Committee, consists of the Division Dean and two faculty members.  The Tenure-track Review will occur in the first semester and each Fall Semester thereafter for the first four years.

The Peer Review Process includes:

a.  A Pre-review conference with the Oversight Committee, to be completed by the 6th week.  Your Division Dean will contact you to schedule this conference.

b.  Informal advisement over the course of the semester.

c.  A Self-study to be completed by the 6th week in years 2, 3, and 4.

d.  Workstation observations by each member of the Oversight Committee.

e.  Student evaluations (At least one classroom student evaluation must be completed by the Mid-semester Meeting.)

f.  Mid-semester Meeting (10th-12th week)

g.  Oversight Committee Conference (14th-18th week)

h.  Performance Review Conference (16th-18th week)

i.  Faculty Performance Review Form (End of Fall Semester)

Adjunct faculty are reviewed the first semester of employment and every three years thereafter. Under special circumstances, all full-time and adjunct faculty may be subject to special review.

For more specific details about the peer review process, consult the Faculty Handbook or the LRCFT website.

Professional Development

Professional Development, or Flex, opportunities are available throughout the academic year.  The Staff Resource Center will send email announcements of all Flex workshops during the semester.  In addition to workshops organized and sponsored by the Staff Resource Center, professional development activities can include conference attendance/participation, publishing, research, etc.

4Faculty.org is an online professional development site that offers modules on several useful and interesting topics.  Users take a quiz at the end of each module, and this logs the amount of time that has been spent on each module.  A report on the total number of hours completed can be printed and submitted to your division dean for Flex credit.
