About

This is just a quick biography, so you can see some of the background for my approach to teaching.

I have a B.A. in history from the University of Washington, but it took me six years to earn it, and along the way I accumulated units from Humboldt State University, U.C.L..A. and Cal Poly, Pomona.  I also worked at several jobs while in school, including work in the L.A Times pressroom, work of several kinds for the Broadway department stores chain, and two years as a bank teller.

With B.A. in hand, I started work in college publishing.  I spent a little more than eight years in that business, including five years with Little, Brown and Company and three years with Mayfield Publishing Company. In that time I was a publishers representative, marketing manager, and sponsoring editor (for political science and for communication books).

In 1987 I started graduate school.  In 1989 I graduated with an M.A. with distinction from San Francisco State University.  I majored in US with a minor in Latin American history.  From there I went to the University of Texas at Austin, where I am ABD.

My primary interests are cultural history, contemporary history and comparative history of the Americas--but really I am a generalist, and that is why I like the challenges of teaching survey courses.
