Resources for Podcasters
How can podcasting be used in education?
There is a wide-range of educational content being developed for and delivered by podcasting. These can be anything from curriculum-related presentations to professional development communities, where educators distribute content and best practices between members.
Students are able to listen to or review lectures or lessons on demand. Podcasts can deliver educational content for listening or viewing on a computer and or on a portable device, such as an iPod or other MP3 player.
Podcast content can be anything conveyed by an audio or video file: a recorded lecture, a foreign language lesson, a demonstration, or anything else. Instructors can easily create a podcast of daily assignments and lectures from class, and easily make it available for all of their students to download.
What tools can I use to create my own podcast?
We recommend the following tools for use in creating podcasts. Some are free, others are available commercially.
-Audacity (FREE, use for recording and editing; PC and Mac compatible)
-iKey Plus(Available commercially, also soon for faculty/staff checkout from the Instructional Media counter, use for recording MP3 directly to a flash storage device)
-GarageBand (Installed as part of the Mac operating system, used for recording, and editing podcasts)
What tools can I use to subscribe to podcast feeds?
An aggregator or news reader is a software program that compiles subscription information, and regularly checks for updated content on websites you have subscribed to. There are different types of aggregators available, and many can be downloaded for free. Some aggregators run as a standalone program on your computer's desktop, while others run inside of other programs (such as your web browser), and some are embedded in web pages, such as Google Desktop or Yahoo! and can be easily customized.
