Playing Guitar with Guarani:

Boa Vinda! I teach anthropology at Sacramento City College and Sierra College. Click on my links to the left for syllabi, and, from there, additional hand-outs, supplemental articles, and related anthro. links.

This is a photo of me playing guitar with some Mbya-Guarani at their aldeia (villlage) in Brazil. For my master's degree in anthropology (UIOWA), I traveled to Brazil and learned about this indigenous ethnic group and their success in controllling their children's education. At Kyringue Yvotyty (their village school), Guarani educators are ensuring that their language and culture are given first priority (their children do not learn Portuguese until they are twelve years old). Their village school enables their children to live as Guarani in Brazil by providing them a bilingual/bicultural education after twelve years of age.

My current research interest is in body movement, the anthropology of dance, and semasiology. I am preparing to return for my Ph.D. in anthropology where I will be exploring these interests in Afro-Brazilian and African cultural contexts.
