Service-Learning ideas for SCC students
Associated with local Sacramento community organizational placements

Business:  social change via business (recycling programs), donation programs through retailers, advocacy campaigns with advocacy organizations, nonprofit work on marketing, programs and fundraising events.

Case Management and Social Services:  Case aides, resource and information development, research, support to nonprofits and social service agencies.  Case management programs exist in homeless programs, health programs, poverty programs, public social services, with all populations and in many social contexts.
 
Communications:  Debate programs, presentations (Anti-Smoking campaigns in schools) PSA's, donation projects, storytelling, speakers bureau's (need students to present SCC recycling program in classes) …

Computer Information Science and Graphics Communications: Web design, change, technical and design pieces, maintenance for nonprofits; computer training--all skills, all ages, many sites, brochures, flyers, logos, promotional, computer set-up, refurbish.  Process donations.

Death, Burial and Grief Services: Hospice programs, Loaves and Fishes Memorial Services, support groups (children's bereavement art group) widowed persons, oral history projects with older adults, older adult activity programs, victims programs.

Dental and Health: Work in nonprofit dental programs for handicapped, homeless, schools, indian health, healthy start programs, CAPC-abuse programs, doing registrations, histories, screenings, education, assisting in procedures as appropriate. Clinics, schools- testing, blood banks, health fairs, advocacy, infant health (black infant health), crisis nurseries.

English and ESL: Writing projects (public info.) reading and writing tutoring, (poetry and story programs), adult education, immigration programs.

Engineering, Physics and Chemistry:  Tutoring, class experiment presentations, Cerebral Palsy "Toy Box" adaptive toy assistance, assistance with home construction for Surreal Estates (and Habitat for Humanity) assess damage, repairs etc. for nonprofits--evaluate mechanical and electrical needs., energy audits.

Events:  All disciplines can experience Service-Learning via events--one day or one time fund raisers, clean-ups, special projects etc. SFBS "Run to Feed the Hungry", WEAVE "Black and White Ball", Sac. Crisis Nursery "Crocker Home Tour" SCUSD School Fairs, Health clinics etc.

Geography:  Create maps as needed for special situations (student friendly SCC parking?), provide directions for events, create maps for nonprofits
Human Development:  tutor beginning readers, oral histories with target populations i.e. teens, homeless, older adults etc., general tutoring all ages, mentoring with special programs i.e. Sac Chinese Center mentoring program, Mother Baby program, Birth and Beyond, Healthy Start.

Nutrition:  Meals on Wheels, Older Adult Nutrition, SAC Greater Grandparents, Mother/Baby programs, Food locker programs, obesity day screening, nonprofit run, walk hula, a "thons."

Psychology:  support services to Mental Health Programs, Independent Adult Gp. Homes, nonprofits, CON-SERV Self-Help, Depression Screening, Obesity Day screening , preschool labs/observations research assistants.
