Mapping: Finding a Connection Between Service and Learning
What do I write about in my reflection assignment? How is my service related to my course? Service-Learning, when connected to the course you are enrolled in, provides deeper learning of important concepts, theories and ideas. Your instructor will identify course connections and you will be encouraged to share your experiences in class as they relate to course topics. One useful way to link service to course concepts is to map concepts and to think of applications to your course topics.
Start with an element of your service such as a student you are mentoring, an individual you are interviewing, a client you are serving in some way. Write this element in the middle of a page and circle it. Then think about the connections. Draw arrows to show other people, places, events, conditions that impact the element, concept or person you are thinking of. A student in a cultural anthropology course mentoring a child might draw connections to the child's ethnic, socio-cultural and economic challenges and then reflect upon how those challenges impact the child's school performance.
Skills and knowledge learned in your courses can also be connected to your service. For example a student in a nutrition course produced a nutritional analysis for a community food distribution program. A bilingual student interpreted for clients in a birthing project program. Communication students prepared and presented AIDS Awareness programs for high school students. Be creative! Be flexible! It is also more meaningful if you engage in service that you care about.
