INNOVATION:

EXPLORING  BEYOND

YOUR  COMFORT  ZONE

Welcome back to Sacramento City College!  We are truly excited to begin the 2008-2009 academic year.  As we head back into our classrooms and offices and reconnect with the campus community, we scan our surroundings for the familiar.  Comfort often lies in the familiar – faces, places, and ways we attend to our daily routine.  This semester, we are going to ask you to challenge yourselves by taking a step or two outside your comfort zone.  We are going to ask you to connect with the unfamiliar – faces, places and actions.  We are going to ask you to try to discover new action modalities, to see your peers and students with a new set of eyes, and to see Sacramento City College through a new set of lenses.  We are going to ask you to explore and go beyond your comfort zone.

In a May 12th article in the Sacramento Bee, educators debated solutions to the ever growing need for remedial instruction in college.  As concerns grow statewide regarding students’ basic skills, the community college stands poised to make a difference – a change.  Community colleges are asking “How we can maximize our students’ success?”   “What can we do to help our students?”  The answers are not in conducting “business as usual,” but in devising and utilizing innovative solutions to persistent problems.  Our answer lies in exploring the possibilities that solutions may be situated right beyond our reach.  In order to create solutions we will have to explore beyond our comfort zone.

The beauty of what we are asking is that by exploring beyond the familiar, not only would you be continuing your professional and personal growth, but also impacting our students’ retention, persistence, and success.

To aid you in this process, we have designed a series of wonderful workshops for you during flex and throughout the fall semester.

We wish you the best this fall and hope you discover and implement innovative strategies as you

 Explore Beyond Your Comfort Zone
