INTRODUCTION
Happy New Year and Welcome Back!
At the start of the 2008-2009 academic year, we challenged you to discover and implement innovative strategies by exploring beyond your comfort zone. As we enter the New Year, we hope you continue to advance teaching, learning and leadership through innovative ideas, activities and interventions as we seek to positively impact our students’ retention, persistence and success.
In the “Academy”, we ask our students to learn new concepts and information and we challenge their perceptions and beliefs. Learning often means change and moving out of one’s comfort zone which can generate anxiety and fear. As educators, we believe the same is true for us. We also must continually challenge our perceptions and beliefs as we engage in the process of lifelong learning. And, as we explore beyond our comfort zone, we too will conquer our anxiety and fear by attempting innovative practices and strategies.
In order to continually enhance the knowledge and skills of faculty, staff, and college leadership, we are offering a wide variety of professional development workshops designed to present new learning opportunities that hopefully challenge and encourage us to stretch beyond our comfort zone.
As a part of this effort, we are very excited to work collaboratively with FACCC’s Education Institute to host its First Diversity Conference: Embracing Change. The conference will debut January 14-15, 2009. The conference will highlight the importance of diversity as a critical and valued part of teaching, research, and retention.
We wish you the best this spring and hope you discover and implement innovative strategies as you
Explore Beyond Your Comfort Zone.
