Frequently Asked Questions

How can a student request tutoring?
Students seeking tutoring must be currently enrolled at SCC in the subject in which tutoring is requested. Complete a
LRC tutoring application-front and back or visit the tutoring reception counter. Please turn in the completed form to the staff at the tutoring reception counter. A weekly scheduled appointment with a tutor will be made on the spot if a qualified tutor is available.

How much does a student have to pay for tutoring?
Tutoring is a free resource to all SCC students.

Does Sacramento City College provide tutoring services to the community?
Tutoring requests from the community are referred to the SCC Job Services where job advertisements from the public can be submitted and are available for students seeking jobs. Call Job Services at 558-2331 for more detailed information.

How can a student become a tutor?
SCC students interested in tutoring in the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center must complete a tutor application, obtain instructor approval, and be interviewed by the tutorial staff. All tutors are required to take a one-unit tutor training course, Human Services 370. This requirement may be waived if the tutor has received an advanced degree or equivalent training. How much are tutors paid?
Tutors can choose to earn units, be paid $7.00 per hour, or volunteer.

How many hours a week do tutors work?
On the average, paid tutors work between 5 and 10 hours per week, not to exceed 20 hours per week.

How can a student enroll in a Tutoring or Learning Skills course? To enroll in courses, it is recommended that the student contact the coordinator of the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center in person (LR-150), by phone (558-2600) or via E-mail (gessfov@scc.losrios.edu) to discuss the student's individual learning need. At that time, a diagnostic test may be scheduled. The student may choose to enroll through the standard registration process or add the course. These courses are open-entry and can be added with the coordinator’s approval after the regular registration period.

How can a student get involved in the Beacon PAL program?
The Beacon PAL learning groups are offered only in courses in which the instructor has elected to participate in the program. Therefore, only students enrolled in those courses will be eligible to join the groups. Students enrolled in courses not offering Beacon PAL should contact their instructor during the first week of the semester to discuss the possibility of forming a Beacon learning group.

How are Beacon groups formed?
Learning assistants visit the classroom to explain the Beacon program and invite interested students to sign up at this time. Students are urged to attend the announced weekly sessions on an on-going basis throughout the semester. Drop-in attendance is not allowed. The Beacon learning groups meet two hours per week in assigned study rooms in the Learning Resource Center or at other designated locations on campus.

What computer resources are available ?
Instructional Media on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center offers 72 computers: a 28-station PC lab reserved for group instruction, 40 open access computers including 29 PC's and 11 Mac's, and four Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) stations. All computers are networked and provide Microsoft Office Suite, the Internet, and instructional software. Two assistive/adaptive technology stations are available.
