Sacramento City College Peer Tutors Job Description
Peer tutors are SCC students who:
- Have taken the courses they tutor.
- Are recommended by their instructors.
- Are trained in effective tutoring techniques.
How to Become a Tutor
- SCC students interested in tutoring in the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center must complete a Tutor Application.
- Application needs to be signed by an instructor recommending the applicant to tutor specific courses.
- After completing this form, the applicant will be interviewed by the tutorial staff.
- All tutors are required to take a one-unit tutor training course, Human Services 370. Beacon tutors are asked to enroll in Human Services 373, Introduction to Group Peer Tutoring.
- Tutors are paid $8.25 per hour. On the average, tutors work 10 hours per week.
Tutor Qualifications
- Enthusiasm for the subject matter.
- Grade of A or B in the courses the tutor will be tutoring.
- Are enrolled in at least 6 units at SCC.
- Maintain overall GPA of 2.5
- Good communication skills.
- Interest in helping others.
- Dependability.
Job Description
- Utilize tutoring skills to assist current SCC students with their academic coursework
- Develop a professional, honest, caring, and comfortable relationship with students
- Be attentive to student needs, especially as pertains to study skills.
- Follow office procedures and complete all necessary paperwork.
- Stop by the Learning Skills and Tutoring office daily to check schedule for new students.
- Check e-mail daily.
- Attend regularly and be prompt in arriving to student sessions.
- Attend mandatory, paid tutor meetings.
