Tutoring

 

 

 





















 

  • Tutoring is a free resource to all SCC students.
  • Tutoring by qualified and trained peer tutors is offered in several disciplines.
  • Students seeking tutoring must be currently enrolled at SCC in the subject in which tutoring is requested.

How to Request Tutoring

  • Complete a "Tutoring Application" (this file is a PDF file which requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat , you will need to download it.)
  • You may also request tutoring at the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center, Learning Resource Center, Room 144.
  • Complete the application and ask a counselor or the instructor of the class you are requesting tutoring for, to sign the application.
  • Please turn in the completed form to the staff at the tutoring reception counter. 
  • A weekly scheduled appointment with a tutor will be made on the spot if a qualified tutor is available.

Objectives of Tutoring

  • To assist students in understanding and learning the subject matter of a course.
  • To help students achieve their academic goals by preparing them for future classes.
  • To help students become independent learners.

Tutorial Options

  • Supervised one-to-one or small group tutoring through on-going weekly appointments.
  • Walk-in tutoring at designated times and according to availability.
  • Collaborative learning groups on request from instructors (Beacon PAL).

Scheduled Tutoring Sessions

  • Individual tutoring sessions are generally 50 minutes.
  • Students can receive up to two hours of tutoring per week per subject.
  • Students should log in and out at the tutoring reception desk for each session, and bring their course syllabus, textbooks, notes and assignments with them to each tutoring session.
  • Students should read and study the material before they meet with their tutor.

Tutors will:

  • Assist in reviewing what has been covered in class.
  • Clarify assignments and help select appropriate strategies.
  • Guide students in critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.
  • Encourage independence in learning and personal responsibility for the learning process.
  • Help students assess their learning styles and learning preferences.

Tutors will not:

  • Repeat class lectures.
  • Do the work for students.
  • Edit or proofread papers.
  • Tutor outside of the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center.

Walk-In Tutoring

Tutoring by qualified and trained peer tutors and instructional assistants is also available on a walk-in basis during scheduled times. Please click here for a schedule of days and times.

  • When coming into the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center for walk-in tutoring, please sign in with the clerk at the tutoring reception counter.
  • Students will be helped in the sequence they signed in
  • If you need on-going tutoring in a specific subject, please consider signing up for a tutor that you will meet on a weekly basis.

Human Services 1000

  • All students receiving tutoring services are required to enroll in Human Services 1000 at no cost to the student.
  • This course offers individualized tutoring designed to assist students to increase their success in college courses.
  • Content will vary depending upon the adjunct course.
  • Attention will be given to essential study skills and utilization of campus learning resources.
  • Students may enroll for support of more than one college course per semester.
  • This course may be repeated in subsequent semesters.
