Workshop Topics

Scheduled and "by request" workshops are available on topics such as time management, test taking skills, and proofreading skills. Workshops are typically offered in both the fall and spring semesters. Please check here for the May Study Skills Workshop Schedule.
We welcome new workshop suggestions from faculty, students, and staff. Brief descriptions of some of the workshops we offer are listed below:

Decoding Math Problems

  • Learn different ways to make learning math better and more efficient.  Learn how to make your time spent worthwhile and productive.

Giving A Successful Presentation

  • A how-to workshop on preparing for a presentation or speech covering tips and common mistakes applicable to all students.

Interview Skills

  • Not sure what it takes to ace an interview for that internship or summer job?  Come by and let us show you the right way to present yourself during an interview.

Test Anxiety

  • Who's afraid of the big bad test?  If you are, let us help ease the fear with a little guidance on how to get over test anxiety and let yourself shine on any exam.

  • Learn how to improve your existing vocabulary and how to acquire new words.  Great way to learn how to master the language of your field of study.

College Culture Workshop

  • For all of you first time students wondering what to expect, this workshop helps to adjust to college life and all that it has to offer.

Crafting a Thesis Statement

  • This is a great way to learn how to develope a thesis for any essay.  It is a must see workshop for eveyone.

CSU Writing Proficiency Exam Workshop

  • Come and find out what writing skills you will need in order to graduate from a California State University.

 Decoding Writing and Essay Assignments Workshop

  • Ever had a writing assignment you just didn't understand?  This workshop will help you cut through the words and find the meaning of writing assignments.

Dictionary Resources

  • The dictionary can be your best friend.  This workshop shows you how to make the dictionary, both online and print, work for you. 

 Documenting Sources Using APA Format

  • Learn how to use proper APA format when documenting sources both in text and in the Works Cited page.

Editing for Errors

  • Having trouble getting a better grade on your essays?  Try this workshop.  It will give you great tips for how to find and fix errors in your essay that may be keeping you from a better grade.

Finalizing Your Report for Bus. 310

  • This is a class-specific workshop for Bus. 310.  It will help you get through the final stages of your report.

Fragments

  • Great tips for spotting fragment sentences in your own writing, plus ways to correct them and avoid them in the future.

How to Ace Your Biology Class

  • Not sure how to get the grade you want out of your Bio class?  Come and learn tips and tricks from fellow students who aced their Bio classes.

How to Write a Lab Report

  • Having trouble writing lab reports?  Let us help.  Come learn how to write a proper lab report.

Integrating Source Material into Papers

  • Now that you've done the research, we'll show you how to work it into your essay.  Get tips for using sources in academic essays and citing them.

Learning Styles Workshop

  • What is your learning style?  How can you best learn with that learning style?

Math Word Problems

  • Learn different techniques of solving word problems.  Take the mystery and anxiety away from these types of math exercises.

Math Lecture Tips

  • Learn different approaches to learning from math lectures.  Learn how to make the teacher's lecture work for you.

  • Combination of two workshops which help students learn, study and succeed in any course.

Proofreading Workshop

  • Come to this workshop to practice finding your own writing errors before turning in that paper.

  • Tired of all the red ink on your essays?  Give this workshop a try!  It will help you learn new ways to check you papers for both ideas and grammar errors.

Punctuation II

  • Part 2 of a series of workshops designed to help students improve their English writing and punctuation skills.

Research and Citation

  • Can't find sources?  Don't know how to use what you've found?  Let us help you!  This workshop can help you find sources and cite them both in text and in your bibliography.

Research Papers

  • Learn the skills necessary to succeed in writing a research paper for any course including research, analysis and synthesis of information and drafting, revising and formatting your paper.

Self-discovery and Personal Growth Workshop

  • The best way to understand the world around you is to understand yourself.  What better way is there to understand yourself than coming to this workshop?  You will learn how to listen to your inner self and become the person you've always wanted to be.

Strategies for Revising

  • This workshop provides various methods for revising essays and improving drafts to create a well written final paper.

Stress Management Workshop

  • Stress hurts.  This workshop will help you fight unnecessary stressors that bother you most and teach you ways to deal with stressors that you can't avoid.

Strategies for Timed Essay Exams

  • Essay exams are part knowledge and part strategy.  We can't help you with the knowledge part but we can help you with the strategy.  Come and learn some great ways to get through those timed in-class essay exams!

Study Skills

  • Got study skills?  If not or you just want to improve the skills you have, join us for this informative workshop.  You will learn the skills needed to succeed and ways to maintain the good study skills you already have.

Textbook Reading Workshop

  • "I read the book, but I couldn't remember anything for the quiz."  Does this sound familiar?  This workshop will help you develop a successful strategy for textbook reading.

Time Management Workshop

  • "Time is on my side, Yes it is!!!"  Come learn how to get time on your side.
